Didja Know?
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is a CG-animated TV
series that aired on the
Netflix
streaming service from 2020-2022 for five seasons and one
special. While the first couple of episodes take place before
and during the events of
Jurassic World,
the rest of them take place shortly after that film, and about
three years before the events of
Fallen Kingdom. Netflix is currently producing episodes
of a sequel series, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, whose
first season began in May 2024.
Each episode of the
series opens with the words "A Netflix Original Series" over
what appears to be a T. rex footprint in the jungle mud.
The
Universal Pictures logo that appears after this is altered
from the usual to have the Earth globe with a continent that
looks very roughly like the supercontinent Pangaea may have
looked in the Triassic-Jurassic periods of the Mesozoic era,
200-150 million years ago.
As the Universal Earth globe spins, a second "continent"
seen is actually a stylized
DreamWorks Pictures logo (a boy sitting with a fishing pole
on the crescent Moon), followed by the
Amblin Entertainment logo.
The dinosaur that bursts out of the
Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous gates at the beginning of
the opening titles of each episode is a Tyrannosaurus rex,
possibly the infamous Rexy herself, but we don't see its right
side close enough to see if it has Rexy's raptor scars incurred
in Jurassic Park.

Didja Notice?
The yacht's stowaway compy seen here for the first time was
introduced by a faint roar at the end of the previous episode
"Stay on Mission".
Kenji refers to himself as "Captain K" in his capacity as
captain of the yacht since he is the only one of the campers who
has some sailing experience.
As Brooklynn works on fixing the yacht's
sonar, Kenji asks her how she learned to do that kind of stuff,
adding, "Did you unbox the Titanic or something?" The
famously "unsinkable" RMS Titanic sank on her maiden
voyage in April 1912 after hitting an iceberg. Brooklynn herself
made an oblique reference to the historic ship earlier when
she joked about manning the conn herself and shouting "Iceberg!
Iceberg!"
Speaking of sonar, it is actually an acronym (SONAR),
standing for "sound navigation and ranging" or "sonic navigation
and ranging".
Brooklynn reveals to Kenji that when her family moved to
London, she
had a hard time making friends and spent a lot of time helping
her dads in the garage.
Looking for the stowaway compy, Sammy and Yaz search a room that
appears to have been Mitch and Tiff's room. Obnoxious portraits
of the two big game hunters are seen hanging on the walls.
|
At 10:53 in the episode, Yaz shows Sammy a drawing she
made of the entire group on day one during the ferry
ride to Isla Nublar. The gang's all there, but Kenji
should not be! He didn't ride the ferry, but was flown
to the island on one of his father's helicopters, as
seen in "Camp Cretaceous". |
 |
When the yacht gets stuck in a kelp bed, the campers worry that
sharks may be present, as they tend to hang out around kelp
forests. Needing a volunteer to go underwater and free the
propeller from the kelp, Yaz demurs, muttering, "Sharks? I'll
pass. Saw this movie as a kid that really messed me up for
life." She is likely referring to Steven Speilberg's
1975 film classic, Jaws.
At 14:03 and 14:26 in the episode, the dirt stains are missing
from Yaz's clothes and skin.
|
At 19:59 in the episode, we see that the Mosasaurus
has an inner set of teeth. This is a true characteristic
(pterygoid teeth) of the species used to help grip
struggling prey and pull it down the throat, similar to
a snake's inner teeth on the upper jaw palate. |
 |
 |
At 21:13 in the episode, a strange lighting artifact in
the CGI is seen in the sky for a split second, just
before the Mosasaur's head splashes back down into the
water.
It is likely part of the splash effect that was
programmed to appear a couple of frames too soon. |

Oddly, Volume Three of the Camp Cretaceous
novelizations did not cover the final two episodes of Season
Three ("Whatever It Takes"
and "Stay on Mission"),
nor are they covered in Volume Four except for a one page summary
of the events of these two episodes, plus our current episode
("Beneath the Surface")...yes, the first episode of Season Four
is also not covered!
