Rafael sets in motion his plan to use the raptors.

Story Summary

Grant and Ellie attempt to escape from Rafael's compound but the crime lord sics the two trained raptors on them and stops the beasts just short of injuring them. We also learn that the two scientists have named the two raptors Alf (Alpha) and Betty (Beta) and the third, injured one, Celia (Cappa)...A, B, and C.

That same day, back at the CENTAMCOM hospital, Malcolm is finally up and about from his injuries. He argues with the base commander that he wants to join in the search for Grant and Ellie, but the commander says he's not well enough. A man walks in saying, "That's all right! I'll look after him!" It is Robert Muldoon, who has miraculously survived the raptor attack that occurred in Jurassic Park.

Back in Columbia, Rafael insists that Celia is now healthy enough to begin her own training and join the other two as his attack dogs. Weeks pass, but Celia's training does not progress as well as Alf and Betty's did; her targeting of attack dummies is not as pinpoint and concise as the other two. Rafael has a job for the raptors and decides to leave Celia out of it.

The Venezuelan government issues indictments of Rafael in a grand announcement in the city of Puerto Miranda, on the steps of the central courthouse. Suddenly the back door of a moving van opens up on the street and the two raptors are released to attack the officials. In all the confusion on the street, a car crashes into a power pole and the broken power lines cause interference that prevents the raptors' electronic punishment collars from working. The raptors quickly realize this and flee into the jungle.

Soon the two beasts have reached Rafael's compound and they attack the doors of the cage holding Celia. Grant and Ellie hear the ruckus and rush to investigate. Celia is freed and she stops Alf and Betty from attacking the two humans; it seems she remembers that Ellie helped care for her after the bullet wound she suffered in "Dark Cargo".

Rafael and his men return from Puerto Miranda and trigger the raptors' collars which are working again away from the power line interference. But the creatures fight through the pain and kill Rafael, then race off into the jungle.

Didja Notice?

On page 1, Grant is inexplicably drawn wearing what appears to be a wedding band on his finger! In later pages it has disappeared.

On page 9, Rafael says, "Home again, home again, jiggedy jig!" He is quoting from a Mother Goose nursery rhyme:

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.

To market, to market, to buy a fat hog,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.

To market, to market, to buy a plum bun,
Home again, home again, market is done.

The government issues indictments of Rafael in the city of Puerto Miranda. Puerto Miranda is a real city, but it is in Venezuela, while we've been told that Rafael's compound is hidden in the Columbian jungle. Still the city is close enough to the border of Columbia that it might be argued that Rafael crosses the border easily enough to hide in Columbia and still have dealings in Venezuela. The raptors also seem to run very quickly from the city to Rafael's compound to free their sister. In the following issue, "Animals/Gods", Ellie says that it took them 18 hours to walk from Rafael's compound in the jungle to civilization.
